After Action Review Support Services

The Client
U.S. Army

The Challenge
The Army Medical Department, or AMEDD, has the directive to conduct After Action Reviews (AAR's) in support of Medical Operations for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These reports are a vital part of the process for capturing feedback and improving service in all areas of mission support for deployed troops. The review process is especially important for AMEDD, so that it can continue to provide the best medical care possible for U.S. troops.

The Solution We provided a team of consultants and professional support personnel to capture and document issues, lessons learned, and recommendations identified during the After Action Reviews (AAR's). Most importantly, we provided Subject Matter Experts that could successfully guide the discussions surrounding the AAR process, as well as data research personnel to provide further information.

The AARs were conducted using plenary sessions to provide an overview of military operations at various levels. At the completion of the plenary sessions, attendees were separated into small groups to develop and discuss issues arising from the initial discussions. Groups were developed around specific Medical Functional Areas, such as Logistics, Laboratory Services, Hospitalization, Preventive Medicine, Combat Stress, and Dental Services.

  • We provided project management and project coordination.
  • We developed a database with all the observations and issues that came out of the OIF AAR process.
  • We provided experienced Subject Matter Experts (SME) to each Medical Functional Area (MFA) breakout group during all phases of the AAR process. Such expertise was critical for guidance and management of the AAR process.
  • We provided SME support for data research and documentation of issues, lessons learned, and recommendations.
  • We provided a consolidated report of all issues, discussions, and recommendations recorded during the functional area breakout sessions
  • We prepared a detailed consolidated report providing all issues, lessons learned, and recommendations using the format required by the Joint Universal Lessons Learned System (JULLS) for each AAR.

The Results
By focusing on the customer's needs, we provided the support that AMEDD needed to capture information from the After Action Reviews. Our personnel brought the right expertise and level of experience to ensure that the capture, documentation, and ultimate delivery of AAF information was useful for AMEDD's continuing successful support of U.S. troops.
